One of the quiet privileges of living in Singapore is how much ocean sits within a short flight of Changi. You can leave after work on a Thursday and be over a coral wall by Friday morning. The hard part isn't distance — it's choosing.
Here are six of the best, from the two-and-a-half-hour hop to the reef that's worth every extra leg. Each suits a slightly different traveller; all of them reward getting in the water.
1. North Sulawesi, Indonesia — walls, soft coral and small science
A single Scoot flight of under four hours reaches Manado, and with it two of Indonesia's great reef systems side by side.
Bunaken is a national marine park built around sheer walls that drop into blue, patrolled by green and hawksbill turtles — and calm enough at the surface for snorkellers to hang above it all.
A short run up the coast, Bangka trades walls for soft-coral pinnacles in red and orange, and for Coral Eye, a fifteen-room outpost that began life as a marine research station and still runs like one.
Best for: divers who want range, and travellers who like their reef with a conscience.

2. Dauin, Philippines — shore diving and a family that dives together
The black-sand coast of Dauin, in the Philippines' Visayas, is one of the world's great stretches of "muck" diving — a house reef, entered straight off the beach inside a protected sanctuary, that hides seahorses the size of a thumbnail, frogfish, mandarinfish and, in the cool season, the flamboyant cuttlefish. Thirty minutes offshore by outrigger, Apo Island turns the register up with coral walls and grazing green turtles. It reaches easily via Manila or Cebu into Dumaguete, then a half-hour drive south.

3. Komodo, Indonesia — current, mantas and dragons
Komodo primarily asks for a connection through Bali into Labuan Bajo, but there are occasional direct flights. However, the reward is some of the most charged water in the region. Cool, nutrient-rich currents pull in schooling fish, sharks and reef mantas that stack up at cleaning stations and feeding lines, while above the surface the national park holds its famous dragons and pink-sand beaches. The currents mean it rewards confident divers, and it's superbly suited to a few days aboard a liveaboard.
Best for: experienced divers chasing big-animal action, with an island-and-dragon adventure attached.

4. Bali, Indonesia — mantas, reefs, and a wreck
At roughly two hours forty minutes direct, Bali is the shortest true ocean escape from Singapore, and it's far more than its beach clubs. The north and east coasts are where the sea gets interesting: the coral and macro life at Amed, the wrecked USAT Liberty draped in growth at Tulamben, and the walls of Menjangan on the quiet northwest. Off the southeast, Nusa Penida runs cooler water where reef mantas cruise cleaning stations year-round and, in season, the strange oceanic sunfish rises from the deep.
Best for: a first ocean weekend, or a warm-up before heading deeper into Indonesia.
5. The Maldives — the classic, an easy step further
At around four and a half hours direct, a trip to the Maldives is barely longer than Sulawesi and delivers a different kind of ocean holiday: the reef, and often the villa, are one and the same. Beyond the postcard, it's a serious wildlife destination — reef mantas and whale sharks in the plankton-rich channels, particularly around Baa Atoll and the central atolls, and hundreds of house reefs a few fin-kicks from the sand.
Best for: travellers who want the water and the comfort in equal measure, without a long-haul flight.
6. Anilao, Philippines — a long weekend of macro
Closer than its reputation suggests — a short flight to Manila, then a scenic drive south — Anilao is the Philippines' macro heartland, a run of dive sites packed with nudibranchs, rare shrimp and the kind of critter life that keeps underwater photographers coming back. It's the easiest of the serious dive destinations to reach for a long weekend from Singapore.
Best for: a focused, camera-in-hand escape when time is tight.
